Super Bowl MVP Trivia and Facts
  • The first two awards were won by the same player, Bart Starr.
  • The University of Alabama produced the first three MVP award
    winners with Starr capturing the first two and Joe Namath
    earning the third.
  • The first defensive player to win the award was the Dallas
    Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley who won the trophy in Super
    Bowl V.
  • Chuck Howley was also the first player to win the award on a
    Super Bowl losing team.  The Cowboys fell to the Baltimore
    Colts in Super Bowl V.
  • The first running back to win the award was Larry Csonka of the
    Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VIII
  • Lynn Swann was the first wide receiver to gain Super Bowl MVP
    honors.  Swann helped the Steelers to a win over the Dallas
    Cowboys in Super Bowl X.
  • The awarding of Super Bowl Co-MVPs following Super Bowl II
    marked the first and only time the trophy has been given to two
    players.  Dallas' defensive stars Harvey Martin and Randy White
    shared the award.
  • In Super Bowl XXXI, the Green Bay Packers Desmond Howard
    became the first non-positional player to win the award.  Howard
    secured the trophy as a punt/kick returner.
  • Eli Manning's Super Bowl XLII Most Valuable Player Award
    combined with Peyton Manning's SB XLI MVP trophy marked the
    first time that brothers had won the award.  
  • Desmond Howard is the only Heisman Trophy winner to earned
    a Super Bowl MVP award.
  • Only Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana have won consecutive
    Super Bowl MVP Awards.
